New Drivers - Frequently Asked Questions

Your teenager just got a driver license.
What's the next step?

  1. We hope that he\she took driving lessons from a school with a good reputation.  Driving lessons are proven to reduce the number and severity of accidents. They can give your child more knowledge than is needed to pass the driving test...important knowledge that could save a life.

  2. You need to call your broker (Fred Nudd Insurance, 251-7693). Your insurer needs to know about new drivers in your household; it's in your policy contract.

Will the premiums be expensive?  That depends on a lot of factors.  Your broker will ask how many cars or trucks you have at your house, and which one(s) your teenager will be allowed to drive.  Generally, the newer the car, the more expensive your teen's premium.  If you have as many cars as drivers, the cost will be higher than a home with one car, where a teenager is seldom allowed on the road.

  3. You may want to consider restricting your teen driver's use of music in the car, and the number of passengers he\she can carry, for the first year or so (some states have made this law).  Your teen needs to drive for several hundreds of kilometers before his\her new skills become automatic.  During the first several months, they need all their wits about them.  Taking their eyes off the road to change a CD, or grinning at a friend in the backseat, has led to numerous fatal accidents.

  4. Be available to your teen for questions as they continue on the road to independence.  They will have questions about new situations in traffic. Let them know that you will help them whenever they need it.  At Fred Nudd, we also welcome questions; please call us anytime.
